Before you can book an LGV Category C or C1 Driving Course, you first need to obtain your LGV Provisional Licence and pass your LGV Theory Test, Multiple-Choice and Hazard Perception Test and also possibly the CPC Case Study, if required.  Below are the necessary steps to get you ready to learn to drive an LGV.

Starter Pack (See LGV Prices)

  • Form D2 (provisional), we can help you fill this in.
  • Form D4 (medical), we can book this for you.
  • Books and discs, we can provide you with training material.
  • Theory Tests, we can book these for you.

If you don't want to use the Starter Pack

Obtain Required Forms
Download DVLA Medical Leaflet D4 & Medical Form D4 and order Form D2 from the DVLA.

Book an LGV Medical Examination
Get a participating doctor to complete your Medical Form D4.  This does not necessarily have to be with your own doctor but you can expect to pay between £60 and £100.  Do not forget to take your D4 form with you.

Apply for Provisional Entitlement
Send your D4 form completed by a doctor, your D2 form completed by yourself and both parts of your existing licence to the DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BR,

Begin Studying
Whilst you are waiting for your licence to return, begin studying for your LGV theory test & hazard perception test.  There are various study materials available to help you, such as, LGV Theory Test Book or CD Rom and also Hazard Perception DVD. Unfortunately these won't sit the test for you. You need to put in the study time to pass.

Book your Theory Test
Once your licence has been returned with your provisional entitlement on it, you can then book your LGV Theory Test and Hazard Perception Test. These are now booked seperately. Try to book them for the same day, to save you making two trips. The system won't let you book them too close together, so try with a 3 hour gap between the two. Don't worry, they usually let you straight in for the next one without you having to wait ages. Don't forget to book the LGV CPC if you require it. Click here to book them online.

Arrange An Assesment Drive
You can either contact
Ben Shaw Training at this stage and undertake a driving assessment to advise you of your required training needs or if you prefer you can wait until you have passed your LGV theory test.

Book your LGV Driving Course
When you have passed your LGV theory test you are ready to contact Ben Shaw Training and book your LGV Category C or C1 Driving Course.
